Watch live: White House holds briefing amid backlash over Abrego Garcia deportation

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will brief reporters Tuesday afternoon as scrutiny mounts over the Trump administration's mistaken deportation of a Maryland man.

Despite acknowledging the mistake earlier this month, President Trump and top officials have defended the move.

Trump, who welcomed El Salvador President Nayib Bukele to the White House on Monday, said the fate of Kilmar Abrego Garcia would be in the hands of El Salvador, the country to which he was deported. The Supreme Court ruled last week that the administration must "facilitate" his return.

Leavitt's briefing also comes as Washington and global trading partners reel over the president's latest sweeping tariffs.

The briefing is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EDT.
