Immigration protests in California and President Trump's deployment of the National Guard to quell them have set up a clash between the president and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), who said Monday the state will sue the federal government over the escalation.

"Donald Trump's violation of the U.S. Constitution is an overstep of his authority. We will not let this stand," Newsom posted to X on Monday afternoon.

His statement followed Trump telling reporters at the White House that he would support arresting Newsom (D) after the governor dared the White House’s border czar to do so.

Later Monday, the Pentagon announced about 700 Marines would be deployed from Camp Pendleton in California to assist in Los Angeles.

Upon returning from Camp David to the White House on Monday, Trump was asked if his border czar Tom Homan should arrest Newsom in the wake of suggestions to do so over the weekend as protests erupted over immigration raids.

Thousands of protesters flooded L.A.'s streets Sunday in response to the National Guard deployment, at one point blocking a freeway and setting self-driving cars ablaze. Law enforcement used tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bangs to control the crowd, The Associated Press reported. As police declared protests in the city to be an unlawful assembly, crowds broke up Sunday evening.

It was the third day of protests after workplace raids began Friday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Trump on Monday afternoon hosted a roundtable on investing in America at the White House.
