House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has surpassed former Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-Calif.) record for the longest House floor speech.
Jeffries broke McCarthy's record of 8 hours and 32 minutes at about 1:25 p.m. EDT after starting his remarks at 4:53 a.m. Party leaders get a so-called magic minute, an unlimited amount of time to argue against legislation on the House floor.
The speech was the only thing holding up Republicans from passing President Trump's "big, beautiful bill."
House Republicans early Thursday morning advanced the measure teeing up a final vote after a marathon day of negotiations and a dramatic overnight vote. It was the second overnight session for Congress in a handful of days.
Elsewhere, Trump will join first lady Melania Trump in meeting Thursday with former Israeli hostage Edan Alexander. He'll then fly to Iowa, where he'll kick off the nation's 250th birthday celebration with a speech at the state fairgrounds.
