Five soldiers have been shot and the suspected shooter is in custody at Fort Stewart, outside Savannah, Ga. A base lockdown has been lifted.
President Trump has been briefed, and the White House is monitoring the situation, press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on X.
Trump is scheduled to announce Wednesday afternoon a $100 billion investment from Apple in U.S. manufacturing.
It will include the launch of the American Manufacturing Program, which would be dedicated to bringing more of Apple’s supply chain to the U.S. and involves the tech giant incentivizing other companies to manufacture more critical components domestically, a White House official said.
Earlier Wednesday, White House peace envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin, just two days ahead of a deadline set by Trump that calls for either a peace agreement in Ukraine or punitive action against Russia.
Trump last week said he was moving two “nuclear” submarines closer to Russia in response to threatening rhetoric from a top Kremlin official. On Sunday, he confirmed the vessels were now “in the region.”
