Fetterman trolls 'resistance' Dems, warns against voting for shutdown

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) offered some words of advice to his fellow Democrats on Friday, while mocking their "resistance" moves against President Trump's return to the White House.

"Never, never, never vote for a shutdown — ever," he posted to social platform X.

His comments come as Congress faces a March 14 deadline to approve a stopgap spending plan and prevent a government shutdown. Because of the razor-thin GOP majority in the House, some Democratic votes will likely be necessary to keep agencies running.

Democratic negotiators working on a resolution to keep the government afloat until a long-term budget proposal is worked out have accused hardline conservatives of pushing priorities they don't support.

“Government funding is always bipartisan," Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"You have to have partners on both sides of the aisle to do it,” he added. “And we need our Democrat colleagues to come to the table and be reasonable about that.”

Johnson also accused Democrats of using the shutdown talks as "sort of weapon against President Trump and his administration, arguing, "that is not the way this is supposed to work."

The last federal government shutdown — the country's longest at 35 days — occurred during Trump's first term in office.

Fetterman, a centrist Democrat who was elected to the Senate in 2022, has already mocked the behavior of some Democrats during and after the president's Tuesday night address to a joint session of Congress, calling their response to Trump a "sad cavalcade of self owns and unhinged petulance."

"We’re becoming the metaphorical car alarms that nobody pays attention to—and it may not be the winning message," Fetterman wrote Wednesday on X.

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) was removed from the chamber Tuesday evening after he refused to stop yelling and waving his cane at Trump. He was later censured for the outburst in a 224-198 House vote with two members voting present, including Green. Ten Democrats voted in favor of the resolution.

Other Democrats held up small signs, including ones that read “FALSE” and “SAVE MEDICAID,” in protest to Trump’s remarks.

Several Democratic lawmakers also filmed a video game-inspired clip with the message "CHOOSE YOUR FIGHTER" that was roundly ridiculed as it circulated online Wednesday. An official White House X account called it "cringe."

"A sad cavalcade of self owns and unhinged petulance. It only makes Trump look more presidential and restrained," Fetterman said. "We’re becoming the metaphorical car alarms that nobody pays attention to—and it may not be the winning message."

He doubled down in Friday's post, listing alongside award medal emoji bullet points: “Snub a 13 year-old cancer survivor,” “Joint Address Protest Paddle Bonanza,” and “Bizarre ‘Pick Your Fighter’ videos."

Next to an emoji representing a mug of beer, he wrote, “Hold our beer: Government Shutdown!,” and posted a screenshot of a news article about Democrats and the looming spending deadline.

His seemingly warm attitude toward Trump has also raised eyebrows in recent weeks.
